American Red Cross Lifeguard Course

This American Red Cross certification course gives
participants the skills and knowledge needed to be a
responsible and effective lifeguard. This course is a blended learning style class. The participant will need to complete the online portion prior to the first in-person class.

The class offers up-to-date information on how to anticipate and prevent problems, as well as how to take action to help those in danger.

The class covers safety and survival skills every swimmer needs to know. Accident prevention, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, and first aid in aquatic environments.

Participants must be at least 15 years old.

1. Without stopping or resting, swim 150 yards (freestyle and breaststroke) then tread with legs only for 2 minutes and complete 50 more yards using freestyle or breaststroke.

2.Timed swim (no goggles) – swim 20 yards, pick up 10 lb brick from 7-10 ft of water and return to shallow end on back with legs only in less than 1:40. This must be completed successfully before you can register for this course.

 

Successful participants will receive American Red Cross certifications in lifeguarding, first-aid, CPR for the professional rescuers and AED.

They will also need to register and pass the swim qualifier(Prerequisite Lifeguard swim tests):1. Without stopping or resting, swim 150 yards(freestyle and breaststroke) then tread with legs only for 2 minutes and complete 50 more yards using freestyle or breaststroke. and 2.Timed swim (no goggles) – swim 20 yards, pick up 10 lb brick from 7-10 ft of water and return to shallow end on back with legs only in less than 1:40. Candidates will receive an email to schedule their qualifier.

Candidates will receive an email after registration from RosesYMCA confirming the registration and with instructions to access the online work.

Most class will run Friday 5:30-8:45, Saturday 8am-6pm, and Sunday 10am-6pm. All class hours must be attended in order to complete the certification.

Lifeguard Re-Certification in Lancaster

This course requires a current ARC Lifeguarding Certification.

Recertification course is open to participants who currently hold an ARC Lifeguard Certification and need to recertify. Participants must bring in current ARC lifeguard certifications to the beginning of class. This course will require participants to pass a pre-requisite test (swim 150 yards, 2 minutes of treading water, then 50 more yards of swim and a timed brick dive with a 20-yard carry) at the beginning of class. Participants must complete the online course work for Lifeguard Certification and attend entire session.

Shallow Water Lifeguard Course

Provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 5 feet and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.

Prerequisites: Minimum age: 15 years; Swim 100 yards continuously; Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs; Complete a timed event within 50 seconds by starting in the water swim 20 yards Submerge to a depth of 4 to 5 feet to retrieve a10-pound object Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and exit the water without using steps or a ladder.
