American Red Cross Lifeguard Course
This American Red Cross certification course gives participants the skills and knowledge needed to be a responsible and effective lifeguard. This course is a blended learning style class. The participant will need to complete the online portion prior to the first in-person class.
The class offers up-to-date information on how to anticipate and prevent problems, as well as how to take action to help those in danger.
The class covers safety and survival skills every swimmer needs to know. Accident prevention, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, and first aid in aquatic environments.
Participants must be at least 15 years old.
Participants are required to register for and complete the prerequisite swim test before registering for the lifeguarding course. The pre-test consists of:
Part 1: (goggles are allowed)
- Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface, then swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both without stopping.
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination.
Part 2: (no goggles)
- Timed swim – swim 20 yards, pick up a 10 lb. brick from 7-10 ft of water, and return to the shallow end on back with legs only and exit the water without using a ladder or steps in less than 1:40.
Successful participants will receive American Red Cross certifications in lifeguarding, first-aid, CPR for the professional rescuers, and AED.
Lifeguard Certification - Lancaster

The participant will need to complete the online portion prior to the first in-person class and attend the entire in-person class to earn their Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate.
You MUST first register for the Prerequisite Lifeguard Swim Test to begin your registration process.
Candidates will receive an email to schedule their Prerequisite Lifeguard Swim Test.
After successful completion of the swim test and registration, candidates will receive an email from Salesforce (ARC) confirming the registration in the Lifeguarding class and with instructions to access the online work.
Most classes run Friday 5:00-9:00 pm, Saturday 8 am-6 pm, and Sunday 8 am-6 pm. All class hours MUST be attended in order to complete the certification.

Lifeguard Re-Certification - Lancaster
This course requires a current ARC Lifeguarding Certification.
The recertification course is open to participants who currently hold an ARC Lifeguard Certification and need to recertify. Participants must bring in current ARC lifeguard certifications to the beginning of class. This course will require participants to pass a prerequisite test prior to registering for class. Participants must complete the online coursework for Lifeguard Certification and attend the entire session.
You must register for the Prerequisite Lifeguard Swim Test to begin your registration process.
- Without stopping or resting, swim 150 yards(freestyle and breaststroke), then tread with your legs only for 2 minutes, and then swim 50 yards using freestyle or breaststroke.
- Timed swim (no goggles): Swim 20 yards, submerge and pick up a 10 lb brick from 7-10 ft of water, and return to the shallow end on your back with legs only while holding the brick in less than 1:40. This must be completed successfully before you can register for this course.
Candidates will receive an email to schedule their qualifier.
Candidates will receive an email after passing their qualifier from Salesforce (ARC) confirming their registration in the Lifeguarding Recertification class and with instructions to access the online work.
Note: A current cellphone number and a unique email address for each participant are required at registration.

Prerequisite Lifeguard Swim Tests - Lancaster
Participants must be at least 15 years old.
Prerequisite test requirements:
- Swim continuously and without resting 150 yards (freestyle and breaststroke), tread for 2 minutes with legs only, then swim another 50 yards
- Swim (no goggles) 20 yards, pick up a 10 lb. brick and return to the shallow end on your back (legs only) in less than 1:40
New Candidates: Please bring Proof of Age. Acceptable forms of identification include a driver’s license, state identification card, passport, or birth certificate. If a birth certificate is used to provide proof of age, an additional form of identification with a photo is also needed to provide proof of identity.
Recertification Candidates: Please bring your current certificate
Both New and Re-certification Candidates will receive an email to schedule their qualifier.
