VOLLEYBALL: MORE THAN JUST A GAME

CLAIRE'S STORY

By Emily Hyser

Many adults often forget what it was like as a child, and today, our kids have overcome more obstacles than ever before—a new challenge offered each day.

So, how can we help them? After all, kids are our future.

At the YMCA of the Roses, we’re committed to nurturing the potential of every child’s future—providing them with every opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

Volleyball is just one of those opportunities.

VOLLEYBALL

Let’s be honest with each other… There’s not a use for most of the skills and techniques involved with volleyball.

Yet, hundreds of young girls in our community come out to play the sport at the Y year after year—with their caregivers cheering them on from the sidelines.

People love it for many reasons, but most importantly, because it turns children into young adults.

The York YMCA Girls’ Volleyball Club enhances its players’ individual and team skill development and character development—all through quality coaching and community service opportunities.

It also sets up our children for success later in life. For example, kids who play sports experience higher self-esteem, lower levels of depression, and they’re 15% more likely to go to college. In team-based environment, kids learn the value of responsibility, friendship, and sportsmanship.

CLAIRE’S STORY

Claire’s parents are seeing a big difference in all aspects of her life—all of which occurred after she joined the Girls’ Volleyball Club.

Even though she only recently began playing, some of her best friends practice alongside her on the court. They laugh together over silly antics, cry together after a heartbreaking loss, and celebrate together when they pull of a miraculous win.
Quite simply, they’re a family—all thanks to you and your support.

The coaches and the rest of the crew reinforce that the players are there to have fun and learn lifelong skills. They’re patient, kind, and knowledgeable, but still push Claire and her teammates to be the best that they are capable.

When the team faces a challenge, they rally around the coaches and work together as a team to get through it.

FIND THEIR FUTURE

Claire and her friends know that properly serving a volleyball isn’t the skill that will set them up for success. They know it’s the formation of their relationships, discipline, and mentorship that will make all the difference. Because of your support, every would-be athlete in our community is able to receive the experience of a lifetime—to become a hardworking and successful adult.

By empowering our youth, today’s children will become the kind of adults who build, shape, and uplift the communities of tomorrow.
